I understand that but the issue is that our documents are protected from changes and we have created files that we want to show our users at 100%.
Changing of the zoom factor is NOT something you can protect against. Anyone can change the zoom factor on a PDF at any time, since it is NOT a saved value...
My apologies Leonard, the defaults have changed but it depends how you make the file. Screen was the job options for version 5 which was 72dpi. This has been replaced in 6 with an option called "smallest file size" and the downsample is now 100 dpi
Actually, smallest file size does more than just that - I believe it also will use some of the Acrobat 6 features to compress additional information in the PDF.
Strangely Indesign has job options for export and here the screen option is a default at 72dpi.
Yeah, the apps aren't completely in sync this way...
I might be mistaken but my understanding is that an image 72 dpi created on a Mac for example of 1*1 inch contains 72*72 pixels.
Yes, a 72dpi image of 1x1 inch will consist of 72x72 pixels. HOWEVER, what defines the image to be at 72dpi is a number of factors including ones at IMAGE creation time, DOCUMENT creation time AND final display.
What OS platform that image is created on OR displayed on is not relevant. Mac's aren't always 72dpi anymore either...Windows isn't always 96dpi, etc. Not all printers are 300dpi, etc.
Now on a pc when displayed at 100% i.e. 1 inch then the pc will display 96 pixels the
reduction in quality I refer to will be the rendering of the extra pixels
and this will not be quite as good as the original.
I don't believe that you will notice this at all...
Plus, as noted above, not all Windows machines are at 96 and not all Macs are at 72. And the differences are dealt with by the OS and Acrobat ...
