I'm trying to do the same by hand with a hex editor.
So I copied the jpg stream inside the 8 0 obj defining the right length
for the stream.

Did you also set all the other values of the XObject dictionary correct? BPC? ColorSpace? Height & Width? etc.



It seems the difference is in the "/Im1 --Data--"; the first has a valid
decoded length while the second as 0.

That would be a problem if the image has data, but the length is 0...
