Our software product writes PS containing pdfmarks. To create a link to a web page, our users can supply a URL and the software + Distiller make the right links to launch the default browser from the PDF reader. Fine, so far.

OK...

Now a customer wants to launch a mail client instead, using the "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]" URI

Mailto URL's are always problematic - not in terms of putting them into the PDF, but in terms of what happens when they are invoked on the client...

When they read the PDF document and click on the link (on Windows, with Internet Explorer as default browser) they first get an error page in IE saying it can't find a page at that address, and *then* get the mail client, properly opened.

That's a completely reasonable and common response.

Acrobat has asked the OS which program "owns" the mailto URL, and was told that it was IE. So IE got the URL, and reacted accordingly...

If you don't like that behavior - you need to fix the client machine...
