Yes, I'm well aware of the "Doc/Open" event.  It's described right there in the 
JavaScript reference.  The "Document Actions" dialog in Acrobat 5.05 lists the 
document events I can attach scripts to.  This list includes the "close" and "print" 
events (both "pre" and "post" versions of these), but no "open" event.  I even 
discussed this fact with Adobe tech. support this morning.  The tech. stated that this 
is "by design".
 
Without the "Doc/Open" event, we've been forced to try to simulate the "Doc/Open" 
event by checking and setting variables in the "Page/Open" processing, which we still 
haven't gotten right.  It's a complete rat's nest.

        Guess what, there is an event which corresponds to the "document
        loading" (or "document opening") event. Have a closer look at the
        places where you can put JavaScripts, and you will stumble over the
        Document JavaScripts.
        
        That's what you have been looking for.
        
        There is another one, which might be useful, and that's the PageOpen
        event for the page on which the document opens.
