As I discussed on the forum a while back...

This seems to be supported functionality for most RIPs running Adobe CSP 3.X. What happens is that the PDF gets translated internally in the RIP into PostScript - the contents of embedded PostScript XObjects just get inserted into the translated PostScript stream which is then RIPed as if it were PostScript. If the SPD commands would have worked in PostScript only, then they'll usually work in PDF as well.

The only place where they wouldn't work would be a PDF only RIP.

My impression with SPD in general is that it can work anywhere on the page - at least as far as duplexing, paper drawer selection and finishing are concerned. The reason, I believe, is that those sorts of functions happen after the RIP has rasterized the page and hence just get recorded internally by the engine for later use by the feedning/finishing equipment, i.e., they have no immediate effect on the rasterization.

You can embed PostScript set page device commands on each page using
PostScript XObjects for most printers that support them.

My impression is that this will NOT work, because PostScript xobjects appear after the page is started, and must therefore follow the rules for EPS - no setpagedevice.

Am I wrong? Does anyone successfully use this technique?
