Recently, I have noticed garbage at the end of a few PDF files, after the final %%EOF. The surprising thing, is that Acrobat does not complain about this garbage. I could not find anything in the PDF specification that would suggest this garbage is legal. Am I missing something?

According to the spec, it's not legal - there is supposed to be nothing before the %PDF- and nothing after the %%EOF...

HOWEVER, for historical reasons (related to the old MacBinary & AppleSingle formats) as well as for compatibility with printer-specific markup, Acrobat allows for up to 1K of data preceeding the %PDF and following the %%EOF.

The PDF/A specification, however, makes such files illegal.
