Well, of course, the other difference is that I downloaded the most
recent cygwin (1.7.7), so if it turns out that you are able to compile
pdfedit 0.4.5 under YOUR version of cygwin, then that would be a
strong suggestion that I might want to back up cygwin instead of
pdfedit.

But if you DO take the time to do this, Mr. Davis, then please take
care to untar the delivery and just do a configure and make.  If it
doesn't fail in the same way on your machine, then I suppose the next
thing I can try is rolling back to an earlier cygwin.
