(2) take the patch you sent me and run "patch -p1 < patchfile" with
the patchfile you sent me,
make_portability_flags_configurable.patch, on November 5;
(3) run the special configure script you sent me on November 6,
using the --enable-poratability-flags=no parameter.
(4) run make.
