Thanks Karl and Craig for responding so quickly. I do have A::F::H installed and I am using it in my call to rfits and wfits since I don't pass afh => 0 to PDL::IO::FITS.
I did try to use tied to get back to the original object but didn't get an object back, so something may be amiss in my perl 5.14 set-up on Mac OSX. I'll check my set-up and see if anything is amiss with my PDL and A::F::H installations. I've used Tie::IxHash and Tie::DxHash extensively in other problems and they work great.
