Fact - Not fiction:

Weekend before last I taught my future wife photography, and started her out
with a SF-10 and Pentax 28-200 and a $24 Velbon SGB-3 tripod (the tripod was
found at Salvation Army Store!).  She used 100 Speed film that day.  We
visited an old spanish mission and did many indoor shots, most with flash.
One a roll of color print film, only shot was not in focus at all, the only
HANDHELD shot she took! - Camera shake.

So tripods have value for the extreme beginner too!
