Most of the big-name anti-virus packages also let you set up a proxy
post office, so they get to look at your email (and filter out anything
suspicious) *before* it makes it to your inbox.

I highly recommend doing this.  It does put a slightly higher load on
your machine, but it prevents you accidentally infecting yourself.
