A technique that I have found useful is to treat it more like a zoom.  Hold
the DOF lever in and then turn the aperture ring back and forth.  You will
see the DOF changing and can then pick what looks best.  Much like zooming
in and out for framing.  It also helps train your eye in what to look for,
because it is easier to recongnize the change.
