There was a lot of sympathy for the German National Socialist movement, and it's anti Semitic views in the US government of the day. FWIW, the Canadian government had a pretty abysmal record during that time from also, what with deporting Canadian citizens of Japanese descent from the B.C. coastal fishing villages and refusing to allow shiploads of Jewish refugees to land in Halifax.
