If the lens did have an aperture ring, it still wouldn't function as an AF-S or VR lens, and it would still make more sense to buy the 2 touch AF 80-200/2.8 D lens. It's the price to be paid for modernizing old lens mounts rather than redoing the whole thing from scratch: screw me now or screw me later.
