I'd be surprised that Nikon would care so much about a relatively smaller player
like Pentax.  OTOH, I remember a couple of years ago, when the larger Canadian
airlines were acquiring everything in sight, and if they couldn't buy a smaller
airline, undercutting their fares so that the little guys were losing money and
had no choice but to sell.  I guess the thought is that by getting rid of the
littler fish, eventually there will only be one or two big players, who can then
beat each other's brains out, without fear of one of the smaller guys gaining a
foothold in the market

If the big guys bash it out while the little guys are still healthy, a third or
fourth player might gain market share.  Of course, it didn't work out too well
for Air Canada, who recently filed for bankruptcy protection...

Then again, I don't know.  Economics and Big Business have always baffled me.
