If you've started using medium or large format, but find that your regular tripod for 35mm is not heavy enough, but you also don't want to spend the big bucks on a Bogen/Manfrotto outfit (it's not hard to blow $250 on a nice set), consider getting an older "video" tripod. Legs are usually solid metal. Head has no tilt, so it's a solid mount for your camera. They go cheap -- $25 - $50 range on eBay, even less at garage sales and thrift shops.
