Only association I could think of was an abbrieviation for 'thanks a lot' (though that should be t-a-l, even if 'a lot' can sound like a single word when you say the phrase). First time I heard it I was quite confused a la "hmmm you said goodbye..hmm.. you're still talking to me", but these days I can use it quite comfortably. Worrying!
