Thanks for your comments. My problem was not enough contrast. The 1 hour
labs gave perfect and contrasty prints. I found I was going to filter grade
5 to get what I would normally get with a 2 or 3 but the prints still did
not seem as rich as what was printed on color paper at the lab. The reason
I use C41 for b&w is that it is a lot more convenient than using the hotel
bathroom for developing when I travel. I've never had a film ruined by an
airport scanner but I'm not willing to take a chance anymore. At home I
normally use FP4 or HP 5 or Agfa in D76 and print on Ilford or Agfa paper.
