When I decided to attach the adapter to a lens permanently, I removed the clip-thingy that holds the adapter to the body. Without it, the adapter will not stay on the body, so I drilled a notch in the lens at the correct point to where the lens release should be, so, in effect, it works like a regular k-mount lens. I used lock-tite on the adapter to keep it in place on the lens-mount threads.
you are right though. If the adapter is not modified you have to unscrew the lens from the body and then remove the adapter.
