Sure it existed back then.  :-)  My first camera, XR-P, with a large shutter 
speed dial which can be turned with the thumb easily. Really great design 
camera, better than any Pentax manual focus cameras, but suffered from poor 
materials.  :-(

A thumb-wheel might have been a better interface, but perhaps they hadn't 
been invented back then... :-)
