no no. The shot went like this The shutter was opened ( it is dark and nothing is exposed) The mortar shell dropped in. (still in darkness) Mortar goes BOOM ( the flame appears ) I release the shutter ( flash fires with rear curtain sync and we see the troops )

After I sent the question, I thought about it some more and realized this is what you probably meant. It's still a new idea for me but makes a lot of sense. It would be a lot easier to react after the motar fired than to anticipate the shot. I have an AF500. I need a tutorial on how and when to use all the features it offers. Thanks for taking the time to clarify for someone on the learning curve.
