This is not a new technology, similar systems were used by camcorder manufacturers for a while now. A large CCD uses just a portion of its surface area at a time to capture video image. This system does not produce high quality still image and that is why it is not used in still cameras. It is satisfactory for consumer camcorders, professional models like Canon XL-1 use genuine optical image stabilizers like the EOS system.
