I don't think that's true for the MX.  I'm looking at an MX and the
damaged pentaprism that was replaced in it a while back.  There is no
need for any mirror external to the pentaprism; it implements the
aperture window image internally.  All that's needed is an opening in
the top cover of the camera housing at the right spot.  The MX has
this, of course, with a piece of glass mounted in the opening to make
the front surface flush, and avoid exposing the pentaprism physically.
