Well, let's see now.  Naugahide is imitation leather made of
some kind of plastic. Companies that use the term "genuine
naugahide" have an extremely low opinion of the intelligence of
shoppers.  I guess they think that we will think a "Nauga" is
some kind of an exotic beast. :-)
