It's grinning because it's known as a Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae).  Very 
common in Australia where Rob lives.  Basically a giant kingfisher that eats snakes, 
lizards and small mamals and has a laugh-like call  "koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa"
