Is there a button cell inside the camera that keeps the clock working ?
This is the way it works on the *istD. There's even a special battery lid for this cell.
It's possible. However, it's also quite possible that there's a capacitor that stores enough of a charge to keep the clock working (even though it wouldn't have enough "juice" to power any of the actual photographic electronics). Just a hunch...
