Shel Belinkoff:

What, BTW, is the difference between software and firmware?

Firmware is software in an embedded system, placed so "far inside" a gadget so you need some kind of "tool" to remove or replace it. Every time you switch the gadget on, the firmware is there, and there is room inside for only one program to be installed at a time: the firmware. Not like the volatile programs of general purpose computers that you load and unload all the time.
