I always have thought that each step on a 8-bit 0-255 scale was the same
size, i.e., linear. The difference in grayness between 0 and 1, was the
same as 254 and 255, or 127 and 128. Is that not correct?

A change from one shade to the next, say from level #240 to #241 is
very small in percent, but if you go from shade #1 to #2 it's a 100
percent increase.
Only if you're using a linear scale.
