Pentax has constantly updating their cameras & lenses so I won't be 
surprised if they did fix it (maybe using better grease?). The sample I just 
returned, had smooth focus ring. I did not tried a heavy metal hood on it 
though, just the FA43/1.9 hood.

The "old" one has deficient focus gearing from what I've understood. 
Impossible to add the weight of an external lens hood on these, for 
example.
