I used GIMP as I was too lazy to go to school to fiddle with it in photoshop.
GIMP has only 8-bit support, which means adjusting the levels, etc. in 256 
levels of gray - evil! I don't know how much alike is the unsharp mask of GIMP 
and Photoshop, but I always get better results in Photoshop, mostly due to its 
convenient preview window.

The technique was higher radius sharpening (~5.0, 50%) at full-res (2900dpi 
scan), then gradually resizing by 30-50% while sharpening with decreasing 
radius and strength (~0.3, 20% in the end) at each step. I was also playing 
with treshhold a bit, but cannot remember the exact values.

I recall preblurring it a bit before the first sharpening, that might have 
caused the grain to effectively increase in size (while decreasing in strength).
