I am sure that the SMC formulation has gone through some development and 
revisions since its early days, I would suggest that its scratch resistance 
would be one of the properties that was improved. In Leica literature that I 
have read they often make mention of constant improvement to lens coatings 
including improved scratch resistance. 

So I would not disagree that the older Tak lenses may be able to scratch but 
I wouldn't say that it would be entirely accurate to include recent lenses. 
Some of my Pentax lenses have been through quite a bit of wear and tear 
and are cleaned regularly, none have developed coating problems or 
scratches. I did however have older Leica glass that had badly scratched 
front elements, glass has also been refined over time and I assume has been 
designed to offer greater scratch resistance of late.
