a centimeter is much larger than you think. even a couple of millimeters is
a lot. if you want to use your old lenses, you have a fixed distance in
front of the sensor that will only grow by adding a light pipe. if the
distance is too short, there are other problems with manufacturing. i think
that the alignment problems alone will make such a device hugely expensive,
to the point where the sensor cost will be trivial.
