I've been testing my consumer zooms today.
Pentax-F 4-5.6/35-80mm (AF)
Tamron 3.5-5.6/28-80mm (AF)
Tokina 2.8-4.3/28-70mm, Aspherical (MF)

And the winner is...
The Pentax lens is the best, at least at medium to long focal lengths
The Tokina is the best at short focal lengths
The Tamron lens performs pretty poorly at any focal length
