the major camera manufacturers who don't have a DSLR now are too late. there is a fair chance that those who don't have a DSLR out today won't be in the camera business in 2 years. this fall/winter, digital camera sales in Japan declined and rate of growth in North America slowed considerably over last year. only Europe is still growing, but its rate of growth has declined. profit margins of P&S digital cameras is razor thin for all by the highest end models and digital camera phones have wiped out anything much below 4 megapixels with 5 megapixels only being a matter of months from being in the same state. DSLRs still have high profit margins and high rate of growth and also fuel much more accessory sales than P&S cameras. on the Pentax front, it has managed to run up brisk sales of the *istDs and both make a profit but also increase market share.
