A step-up ring is out of the question.  The filter would intrude too
much into the viewfinder when used with a hood, although used by
itself it might even be better than the standard hood on some of the
lenses.

Having an eyeglass shop cut the filter might be a good idea.  Don't
know if the whole thing is worth the cost of admission though since
I've already paid almost $100.00 for the B+W filters.  Then there'd
be two SMC Pentax filters, the cost of cutting them down, the cost
of two old filters with good 39mm rings, and the cost of having
someone install the cut Pentax filters into the rings if, for some
reason, i couldn't do it myself.
