But it is also the choice of primary manufacturers making flash
systems new every few years like A-TTL,E-TTl,E-TTL2, D-TTL to i-TTL
(rendering all these nice D-TTL flashes useless on D70), etc.

It could be pretty hard to reverse engineer all of the communications
correctly. Metz can take credit here that their flashes worked well.
Unlike Sigma, whose newer flashes working on i-TTL nikons don't give
much reliable results.

I think that plain wireless TTL could work with the combination you
mentioned. If it did work (did it?) on film bodies, IstD does use the
same TTL system if an older flash is mounted, I believe, like the film
bodies.
