I see the DA 40 as an alternative to the 35. The 50 is much faster. The real advantage of the 40 is that it is so small (and has that compact hood) that it fits easily under a coat in bad wether or even in a big coat pocket. It's just "flatter" than many other SLR/lens combinations.
