Hi Bill,

I spent some time during the last week using a new 308RC (resin) Ball head,
it is smooth and stable and locks tight if necessary, it has a sure lock on the
QR and the locking lever can be set to provide a comfortable operation angle
which is very handy. I would use it with my 300f2.8 lens with no reservations.

I have a 168/3055 (steel) Ball head too, the locking levers are no where near
as easy to use but is fitted with the older hex QR plate which allows it to be
used with the 340 Elbow bracket. I had an older one of these heads that was
owned by a pretty hard working wedding pro, the steel ball was so worn and
rough I gave it away, so I would assume that either type will wear badly given
hard use or inappropriate use (ie allowing dust/grit to enter the mech).
