A lot of the look that Ravilious was getting is what I want to explore, but
in this particular instance I was looking for a way to get that sort of
halo of white, that glow off the bright areas that one sometimes sees.  I
recall having done it often years ago, but I cannot recall how I got it.

Much of that look is from veiling flare from uncoated glass, and it can be quite attractive. One of the things photography has lost by trying to eliminate what some see as flaws in the equipment is a boring and homogeneous sameness.

I know I mentioned the Tiffen Soft F/X filters, which are much like a poor man's Softar, but I think you might have better luck with a Pro Mist (I believe that's what they are called).

You can try to get something similar by spreading a bit of nylon stocking material across a filter frame. If it's too soft, burn a few holes in it with a lit cigarette.
