Thanks for the comments.  That seems to be the general consensus about
this lens, which is fine by me - I bought it with the intention of
using it for some portraiture.  I burned a roll last night playing
with a single strobe and a softbox.  f5.6, if I remember correctly.  I
guess we'll see how they come out.
