Given what I've heard on this subject recently, you are no doubt correct.

Perhaps I need to take apart the flash units and introduce a bit more resistance, or do I mean impedance?

That's my probem, too.  I could of course spend a grand or two on super
new equipment, but if the camera had 50 ISO I wouldn't have to.

I suspect a camera with ISO 50 capability would cost substantially more
than a better lighting setup ;-)
