It is a funny tool. Sometimes it does  wonders, and in other instances it
makes dreadful results.

Sometimes I make a duplicate layer, apply shadow and Highlight, then  adjust
opacity of the layer.  That helps when you have a real hot highlight  that
is
hard to deal with in curves.
