What about monopodding? This is almost
as good as a tripod but way better than
hand holding. I use monopod at all times
for 400-600mm lenses. 300 and under I handhold.
With my 1000mm, ALWAYS a tripod.

There's at least one regular amongst the photgraphers I see at race meetings
who hand-holds a 400/2.8 (on a Canon megabody, no less)
