those of you in the retail photofinishing business know that what keeps the companies in business are the 90% of the camera buying public interested in snapshots where the criteria for a good picture is being able to recognize the subject. it's their spending money that is funding the R&D into the fancy schmancy SLR cameras of all types that we buy. if all they catered to was us, they wouldn't be in business.

witness Leica. the board of directors has been given an ultimatum by Hermes, the largest shareholder: find a partner to build more P&S digital cameras or get rid of the camera division. if Leica can do that, Hermes will give them more money. so far, no-one is interested in partnering. getting rid of the camera division includes closing it down permanently.
