if you had a camera with a decent capture buffer and a proper pan head, it
should be possible to take a complete panorama sequence with no more than
half a second per frame exposed. light changes, but not that quickly most of
the time.

Oh yes! Here's how mine varies: For landscape shots with a lot of detail
that I want to blow up large I take 4-6 shots and stitch them together.
Next year at Grandfather Mountain I'm going to be giving a presentation
on this topic. I'll bring along some big prints of 18-25 megapixel
images taken with the ist-D and 31mm Limited.
I agree with you. It is just that not all motifs are as static as
landscape...
