I agree 100%  on both points.  One problem I've seen frequently is that the
quality of the color image has not been maximized before the conversion is
begun.

Shel, now you're talking ;-). In fact, all this time I was doing my b/w conversions based on the exactly opposite assumption. Convert to b/w as soon as possible, then go about maximizing the quality of the image itself...

I am going to do it your way now.
