I agree 100% on both points. One problem I've seen frequently is that the quality of the color image has not been maximized before the conversion is begun.
Mark!Shel, now you're talking ;-). In fact, all this time I was doing my b/w conversions based on the exactly opposite assumption. Convert to b/w as soon as possible, then go about maximizing the quality of the image itself...
