For architectural stuff, I expect you're correct. I do landscapes and just use a normal tripod & ballhead. I prefer the 31mm f/1.8 Limited and the FA 28/2.8AL but I've used the Tamron 17-35/2.8-4 a couple of times. Good stitching software helps a lot.
