So, what killed chromes?  The advent of C41?  I can't believe that
alone did it.  Because while it certainly made colour prints
economical for the snapshot consumer, the price differential didn't
kill black and white, it merely wounded it.

Colour was always the goal of photography, however the colour print was the Holy Grail of photography and when they became commercially viable in the mid 60's, they pretty much killed the consumer slide business.
People want prints, always have, always will.
It was the C22 process, BTW.
