You can not be a craftsman doing general commercial work, it just takes
too long. That does not mean that many tradesmen do not know how to do a
craftsmanlike job, just that economics does not allow in normally.
Saying that I did work for a contractor once who would only take time
and materials jobs, working for him we could do much better quality work
that usual, it was a nice experience. Workmanlike is acceptable,
craftsmanlike is perfect, that pretty much is the definition of the two.

I don't disagree with you Tom but I have to point out that there are many
craftsmen in the unions too. I've worked with carpenters, dockbuilders,
laborers, electricians, operators etc for 34 years and I've known many
tradesmen who took great pride in their work.
