I looked into renting gear a while ago - Nikon equip from an outfit in
Indianapolis (name escapes me @ the moment).
If I needed the gear for a paying job it might have been do-able, but the
cost to rent for a few days was prohibitive for the casual shooter.

That makes perfect sense. Rent or borrow some gear and see if it does
the
trick.
That works for some people. I checked around for a while, no one in my
neck of the woods has a 600mm lens for Nikon or Canon.
